Storm Eunice brought severe weather across the West Country, with gusts up to 122 mph. Close to the highest speeds ever recorded in England.
This left many across Somerset with severe disruptions to their electric supply. I know how difficult this has been for so many people locally, and I have experienced the same disruption.
My office and I have been in regular contact with the two power distributors in Somerton and Frome – Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks and Western Power, along with the Senior Contingencies Officer at the County Council.
I know that some of us continue to have serious issues with power, and many have been left vulnerable. While the situation is improving - and I am pleased that over 98% of those affected by the storms, more than 1.4 million have had their power restored – the situation remains difficult for many, as just under 30,000 households are still without power.
The Government is working closely with organisations around the country to alleviate the effects of Storm Eunice. Power and telecoms sectors are adding additional engineering and customer service resources, deploying flood assets in areas at risk of flooding and placing military personnel on standby to assist first responders.
